In this  two-hours-long virtual workshop and embroidery class we will explore some of the historical, older styles of the famous Matyó embroidery of Hungary’s North-Eastern Matyó region. We will learn stitches specific to the region that were used to create the red-and-blue embroidery common in the mid-19th century called ‘cipés-madaras hímzés’ or ‘embroidery with birds and shoes’. We will also take a look at some of the earlier stitches used to fill out the Matyó roses or peonies on aprons made before the widespread availability of inexpensive threads colored with aniline dyes. We will study this disappearing style of embroidery while practicing interesting-to-execute and and no longer commonly used embroidery stitches.

This class is suitable for confident or advanced beginners, as well as intermediate embroiderers. You can take this class even if you have neverdone Matyó embroidery but understand the basics of working simple embroidery stitches.

The class zoom meeting link as well as a PDF handout with embroidery designs we will be working on will be sent the day before class. Videos of the more complicated stitch combinations will be available for your reference after the workshop as well.

Supplies needed:

  • Medium-weight linen fabric or cotton muslin or broadcloth
  • Cotton embroidery thread - for this class I recommend perle cotton #5 or all 6 strands of cotton embroidery floss. Perle cotton #8 can also be used for embroidery style but it will take longer to complete the design using thinner thread.
  • Embroidery or chenille needle
  • scissors
  • transfer materials
