Folk art meets Tarot: learn to embroider and create a unique Tarot cloth and piece of textile art in this two-session workshop.
This class brings together heritage embroidery techniques and symbolism with the contemporary practice of Tarot. We will begin by starting a sampler of embroidery stitches we can reference and add on to throughout the workshop. We will review basic embroidery techniques, tips & tricks for managing thread, working with different materials, and how to transfer designs to fabric.
We will look at some finished Tarot cloths for inspiration, along with folk art textiles, their symbolism, books and art work, and of course a few different Tarot decks as we begin to design our individual cloths. Bring meaningful objects, images, or textiles that would resonate with your cloth. We will talk about folk art symbols and charms, the symbolism and history of Tarot, as well as folk art traditions that draw on stitched motifs to infuse protective and divinatory meanings into clothing and household textiles. We will discuss the history of the symbols, and the cultural history that has created these two very tactile and personal forms of folk art.
During the second session, Hudson-based Tarot reader, herbalist and astrologer Myrto Daskaloudi will join us and be available to give every participant a personal Tarot reading.
Experience with embroidery or Tarot not necessary though knowledge of basic hand sewing useful. Curiosity and kindness required.
