Learn the basics of Hungarian Matyó embroidery in this 2-hour virtual class.

Many of us remember the Hungarian embroidered peasant blouses of the hippie era, a unique embroidery style that has come to stand for traditional Hungarian embroidery. Popular worldwide since the early 20th century, Matyó embroidery has roots going back over a thousand years.

We will learn the basic stitches and motifs of Matyó embroidery, and practice how to form the peony petal and leaf shapes characteristic of this embroider.

We will stitch a small design I created for this workshop that would work well for a bandana or the front of a blouse. We will learn methods for starting and ending threads, and changing thread colors in a way that makes the back of the embroidery look very nearly identical to the front. This is traditionally considered important for embroidery on garments, and is very useful for an item like a bandana, the back of which is sometimes visible when worn.

This class is suitable for more advanced embroiderers as well as adventurous beginners.

Zoom link will be sent the day before the workshop, along with a PDF handout containing embroidery design we'll be working on.

Please have the following items ready for class:

  • piece of cotton broadcloth fabric in a light color or muslin, about the size of one sheet of paper
  • #8 Perle cotton thread in 3 to 6 bright and contrasting colors
  • Chenille needle or crewel/embroidery needle
  • scissors
  • pencil or fabric pen available in craft stores
  • optional: 4" embroidery hoop
