I’m Kati, designer & founder of Kate & Rose Patterns. I’ve always loved the folklore of Central Europe, with its wildly colorful, hopeful and exuberant embroidery. Kate & Rose Patterns are inspired by the timeless styles of folkwear and made by you: busy women who live in the here and now.
I was born in Hungary and raised in a lot of places, and now live in New York with my artist husband, our two daughters, dog and cat. I learned to embroider in elementary school, and my grandmother taught me how to sew when I was fourteen. Sewing and making things has been a constant in my life ever since. It’s stayed with me through many moves and careers – I’ve worked as a translator, interpreter, non-profit manager, I got a Ph.D., I’ve danced in a flamenco troupe and made digital art and video installations. Through all of it the one thing that never changed was that I kept on sewing, stitching, making things.
After my daughters were born, I went back to school to study patternmaking at FIT, and started the Kate & Rose pattern line with the Róza modern peasant blouse. A series of hot-iron embroidery transfers inspired Eastern European embroidery followed, then the three sewing patterns of the Midtown Collection. All patterns are available in my shop.
